Frito-Lay originally enlisted the services of DFW Consulting Group over 20 years ago to design a data center that was storm resistant and reliable. As technology improved and the needs of the facility grew—Frito-Lay called on our services to upgrade the facility several more times.
This facility was originally designed by DFW Consulting as a new Tier II data center for PBSG on the Frito-Lay headquarters’ campus in Plano, Texas. The facility included a Network Operations Center and two floor of raised floor IT space. Due to the site location being at high risk for tornados, extra caution was taken to the design and location of external mechanical and electrical equipment. The two main utility transformers and generators are protected by 14 foot tall precast concrete walls. Over the lifespan of the building it was upgraded several times. We performed all of the upgrades through the years which included: conversion from a Tier II to a Tier III facility, adding a new 2 MW UPS System, a 4 MW standby generator and doubling the electrical service capacity. Each time an upgrade was made it was crucial that the power supply not be interrupted or shutdown while the upgrade was taking place.
