Hobby Airport Satellite Central Utility Plant

Houston Airport System was looking to increase the efficiency of their central utility plant, address low-delta T syndrome, and free up space at the ramp level of their terminal by relocating their chilled water central utilities from the terminal to a pre-constructed Satellite Energy Plant. DFWCGI designed 4,400 tons of chiller plant fit-out within the shell building, which consisted of four (4) 1,100-ton water cooled chillers, four (4) 1,100 ton stainless steel cooling tower cells and all the associated piping and pumping, including interconnection to the existing terminal hydronic distribution network. Phasing plans were developed to allow for startup of the new plant and then decommissioning of the legacy plant without disrupting airport operations.

DFWCGI provided MEP engineering services and acted as the prime engineering consultant for the design/build initiatives, managing the team’s sub-consultants of Architects, civil engineers, structural engineers and commissioning consultants. Additionally, DFWCGI performed construction administration services and interfaced directly with the General Contractor and their sub-consultants. DFWCGI also helped the owner and GC develop equipment pre-purchase packages to reduce the burden of long equipment lead times.
